About NEST HOMES - Our Story
Rooted in Tradition, Driven by Sustainability
Owner John Mitchell grew up surrounded by the craft of home building—his father built nearly 200 new homes in Northeast Iowa. But while tradition laid the foundation, John’s true passion was sustainability. After earning a degree in Environmental Science, he set off on a path dedicated to greener living, managing an environmental education program at The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx.
A Decade of Energy Expertise
When John and his young family moved to the Twin Cities in 2002, his interest in green building took off. Over the next 10 years, he became a master home energy consultant, conducting more than 4,000 energy assessments. This hands-on work taught him what makes a home truly comfortable, efficient, durable, and healthy—and helped thousands of homeowners improve their living spaces.
Building Tomorrow’s Homes Today
John’s vision of creating eco-friendly homes became reality when he transitioned into home construction management. For more than a decade, he’s led projects across the Twin Cities, overseeing over $40 million in residential builds—from single-family residences to multifamily communities.
Highlights include:
- 4 DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes – Built to use 70% less energy than typical new homes
 - 8 EPA EnergyStar Certified Homes – Designed for 30% greater efficiency
 - 8 EPA Indoor Air Plus Certified Homes – Crafted with materials free from toxic pollutants

Our Mission
Every project reflects John’s lifelong commitment: to build homes that are better for families, better for communities, and better for the planet.
